NEW FOR 2021
We have an exciting opportunity to help the Nelson and Colne College group equip their young people for today's world. Nelson and Colne college have always been a UK leader in further education and as their students grapple with the after effects of the pandemic, they want to ensure that time is built into the curriculum for them to learn about themselves and where their place may be in the world. They want to teach their students real life skills, in addition to vocational, technical and academic learning. We are looking for volunteers to pledge just 12 hours a year to take part in mentoring events and offer work-place visits for students in Social Care, Childcare, Digital, Business, Creative Arts and Media, Sport and Law, justice and protective services. If you like the sound of the above, please do get in touch here wendy@role.uk.com

This is me at 17. I was doing my A levels at Nelson and Colne college and this was my first ever trip away with my boyfriend. We had no money and walked miles every day across London, but must have been on a tube this particular day. In the main, I was enjoying life and looking forwards to University. It wasn't all rosy; my Mum had mental health issues and I was often anxious and spent as much time as possible on my boyfriend's farm. Actually I didn't go to University at all, instead I got married at just 19 and built a business with said boyfriend, who became my husband. All my plans of being a nature journalist went up in smoke and it took my 40 years to realise that, if I'd had more confidence in myself at 17, I wouldn't have got married so young and I would have pursued my dreams of being a writer. I am therefore passionate about helping teenagers understand their choices, what matters to them and what their natural abilities (gifts) are. Our college events and programmes bring together students with alumni and a wide variety of employers and employees, to help young men and women see that there is a place for them in this world, and that despite the pressures that our education system places on them, their teachers and the majority of adults, want to help them discover it.
Role works with schools and colleges, bringing together successful local men and women and teenagers to:
- Share in upbeat and motivational sessions which promote self-belief
- Improve self awareness and basic communication skills
- Debate relevant issues eg. careers advice and the portrayal of women in the media.
- Learn about local career opportunities in an informal setting
- Develop role model and mentoring relationships.
OYSTERS AND PEARLS March 2020
We mentored 60 female students at Nelson and Colne and Accrington and Rossendale colleges and had an amazingly inspiring day. Students who came in to the event feeling self conscious and unsure of what the day was about were buzzing within 2 hours as you can see. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers! Watch out for our next Oysters and Pearls events in November 2021.
We asked the students "What one thing will you do differently after today?" and here's what they said.
"Have more confidence in myself"
"Know that I can choose my thoughts"
"Help more people"
"Be more positive when I wake up in the morning"
'Know I am unique and not weird"
"Believe in myself"
This is why we deliver Oysters and Pearls. Please contact me here if you'd like to arrange Oysters and Pearls at your college or school.Contact
